Surgical Infection Alters Major Histocompatility Anigen Expression on Murine Lymphocytes

Abstract
In humans, a decrease in monocytes expressing the HLA-DR antigen on their surface correlates with both major trauma and anesthesia and surgery. This decreae in proportional to the likelihood of developing major bacterial
infection.
In vitro studies have shown that gamma interferon may increase monocyte HLA-DR expression and possibly have a protective clinical effect. In order to examine more accurately the effect of infection of major histocompatibilityu
complex
antigen(MHC) expression. We undertook to study changes in Ia antigen expresson, a murine MHC analogous to HLA-DR antigen, on perpheral
blood lymphyctes of CBA-J mice.
We conclude that major infection results in decreased expression of Ia antigen on murine lymphocytes. Furthermore, treatment of animals with gamma interferon after contamination has occurred results in a return of Ia antigen expression to
normal
values.
